A Grandmother’s Prayers

My husband and I are reading A Grandmother’s Prayers together each morning after our Bible reading but before we pray. Author Kay Swatkowski writes in the introduction:

“During my years spent working in women’s ministry, I constantly heard women affectionately sharing stories like these of the love, support, and prayers of their grandparents and the effect of these relationships on their Christian life…

“It is my prayer that A Grandmother’s Prayers will be a source of encouragement to you as you bring your cherished grandchildren before God. May it be a reminder to you of the important role you play in the emotional and spiritual lives of children.”

The book is designed to be read over 60 days. Each day begins with a devotional that focuses on one subject about which we may intentionally pray for our grandchildren… wisdom in choosing friends, developing a generous heart, learning to be content, and many more. Following the story, the author writes specific prayer points and even a prayer to help us get started.

I especially appreciate the next heading: Think and Do. Oftentimes she challenges us to reflect on our own childhood and then how we might share that spiritual truth with our grandchildren. She offers several suggestions and you can do one, more, or none. It’s up to you. I am thankful that Jim and I are reading this together because it is instigating some wonderful discussions about our pasts and our hearts’ desires for the future.

She completes each day with several Scripture references that support what she has been discussing.

All in all, a well thought out and encouraging book to lead us into specific prayer.

“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” Deuteronomy 4:9
